Medium is an online platform whose primary essence is to unfold ideas through prose texts, that is, texts that translate inspirations and this gives privilege to conventional descriptions in the form of sentences, paragraphs, etc.

However, there is a lot of demand for scientific texts, which have a language based on scientific symbols. The Latex language is one of the languages that provides expert support for writing scientific texts. Latex is rich in options for this.

But nothing is so complete that it cannot depend on creativity. So we put here an idea of how to present scientific descriptions in the Medium environment.

Strictly speaking, in scientific texts mathematical expressions are usually presented prominently, but they can also be presented in the course of a sentence if this is appropriate for the context.

1️⃣ Let’s use the well-known Pythagorean theorem as an example. This theorem uses the power-add operation on an equality expression as a formula.

  • Click on the Latex Chrome extension icon:
  • Type in the pop-up text box the mathematical expression in Latex language syntax:
  • Copy the generated image below the text box:
  • Then paste in the desired text position:

2️⃣ Another good example, the sum of squares of sequential integers.

The syntax is a little more specific:

1^2 +2^2+3^2+4^2+\cdots+n^2=\frac{n\,\left(n+1\right)\,\left(2\,n+1\right)}{6}

But the steps will be the same, see.

  • By clicking to open the Latex form (text box), it is possible to adjust the dimensions of the text box (not necessarily):
  • Typing text in Latex:
  • Copying the generated image:
  • Pasting in final destination:

Result:

⚠️ Note that the pop-up window is volatile and will be canceled if you switch to another application.

⚠️ In case the expression is very complex, it is recommended to write them in a notepad (Windows notepad, for example) and then paste them in the text box.

3️⃣ Expressions in line with the text.

It is recommended to write the minimum of mathematical expressions embedded in the text, but if it is indispensable it is possible to write them, but with some limitation. Let’s take an example.

— Be the sentence: given a product of any three factors, x₁, x₂ and x₃, then the order of these factors does not change the product.

To produce the subscripts from 0 to 9 type use the Alt-Code shortcuts for subscript in a text editor like Wordpad, or Winword

  • For 0 subscript, use Alt+8320;
  • For 1 subscript, use Alt+8321;
  • For 2 subscript, use Alt+8322;
  • …;
  • For 9 subscript, use Alt+8329.

— Be the sentence: the expression √-1 represents an imaginary number.

To produce radicals use?

  • For √, Alt+8730;
  • For ∛, Alt+8731; and,
  • For ∜, Alt+8732.

🔎There is a local option with the help of the Windows+Period keys, which also provides a limited set of subscripts.
